GENERAL GUIDELINES

Suggested by the WV Department of Agriculture Health Requirements – Pullorum/Typhoid testing be conducted prior to exhibiting birds at the fair.

  1.  THERE WILL BE NO ENTRY FEE.Participants in the Junior Poultry Show must be a member in good standing of the Wood County 4-H or FFA programs, must have attended one of the two mandatory Youth Quality Assurance trainings, and have filled out a Livestock Agreement for 2019.

  1. All project animals must be registered with the WVU Extension Office or FFA Instructor by June 1, 2019.

  2. All poultry including Market Pen of Turkeys and Market Pen of Chickens will be weighed in on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 7:00 pm.

  3. Completed Project Livestock Exhibitors must have a completed project to receive a fair pass and sell their animal in the Wood County Junior Livestock Sale.

  4. Completed Project=70% or higher score on Project Book +Record Guide+ Fair Exhibit + Activity Record

  5. The barn will be closed to the public and parents during the chicken weigh in and during the poultry show. **

  6. Any project animals that do not meet weight guidelines will be permitted to exhibit in the showmanship only.

  7. Project books and activity records are due at the WVU Extension office Tuesday, June 5th, 2018. Record guides and Thank You cards are due in office Friday, July 27, 2018.

  8. All animals must comply with the WV Department of Agriculture Health Regulations and WILL BE HEALTH CHECKED before being allowed into the barn.Animals must be healthy and sound (no injured or deformed animals). THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

  9. The American Standard of Perfection as revised by the American Poultry Association will be the guide for the judges in awarding premiums.

  10. Exhibitors must provide a three slot poultry carrying cage for showing their birds and for the sale.

  11. Single birds cannot compete in Trio.Birds in Trio cannot compete single.

  12. The term Cock & Hen – Birds hatched prior to January 1, the year of the fair. Cockerel & Pullet – Birds hatched after January1, the year of the fair.Trio – Consisting of on Cock or Cockerel and two Hens or Pullets.

  13. Exhibitors are requested to see entry tags are placed on each coop.

  14. FEEDING, CARING FOR AND GROOMING OF THE ANIMALS MUST BE DONE BY THE EXHIBITOR.

  15. All aisle ways are to be kept clear. Pens are to be cleaned daily by 10:00a.m.

  16. EACH EXHIITOR NEEDS TO SIGN-UP TO WATCH THE BARN AND ANIMALS DURING THE WEEK.

  17. Age on day of the show will determine the showmanship class that each exhibitor will show in.

  18. Only animals that are NOT going to be sold at the livestock can be removed after the show on Wednesday, July 18, 2018. ALL LIVESTOCK MUST BE REMOVED BY SUNDAY JULY 21, 2018 BY 10:00

  19. Any animal purchased outside of West Virginia must be accompanied with Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers certified by a veterinarian) when checking in at the WV Interstate Fair.       a. Contestant's ability to properly show his/her animal to the judge..                                                  b. Appearance of the animal and the exhibitor                                                                                      c. Appearance of contestants; such as proper dress, neatness, clean clothing and boots, and grooming, and spotsmanship                                                                                                              d. Knowledge of animal project, marketing and livestock industry.

  20. The Project/show Chairmen reserve the right to interpret rules governing the Poultry Show.

  21. Exhibition score is determined by the project chairmen. The score can be based on the pen cleanliness, cooperation with others, being on time for shows, etc.

  22. All exhibitors must be in proper show attire when showing in the market class, showmanship, as well as for the sale. Proper attire is defined as a Wood County 4-H or FFA show shirt, jeans and boots. Contact the WVU Extension Office or FFA Instructor to place an order for your shirt.

  23. All animals MUST be shown in showmanship and market class for an animal to be eligible for sale.NO EXCEPTIONS unless illness, accident, death or other extenuating circumstances occur.
